The Georgia Main Street Program began in 1980 as a pilot program under the National Main Street Initiative launched by the National Trust for Historic Preservation. The program began with five local communities and has grown to serve 96 communities in Georgia.
In January 2015, under the direction of Main Street Manager Karla Weaver, the City of Ball Ground earned the distinction of a “Georgia Main Street Community”. At that time, Ball Ground joined 13 other Cities in the 10 County Metro Atlanta Region to have achieved this designation.
As a Main Street Community we focus on revitalization of the central business district, design, promotion and economic development. The Main Street Department works with existing and potential business clients, provide access to training, low interest loans and design assistance to help their existing or future businesses prosper. Since its inception, the Main Street Program in Ball Ground has worked with business and property owners in the restoration of 2 downtown buildings, with 1 restoration currently under way and 2 additional scheduled to begin in January 2017. The program has also assisted in matching potential businesses with property owners resulting in the establishment of 20 new businesses in the district, with more businesses anticipated in January 2017.
The Ball Ground Main Street Board also sponsors the Ball Ground Rocks the Park summer concert series, the Movie in the Park series, The October Spooktacular as well as co-sponsors the annual fireworks display.
All events are geared to provide a good time for our residents and create foot traffic in our central business district.
