Around Town – June 6, 2018

Hello Ball Ground:

Weekend Events

The Ball Ground Garden Club will host their first annual Ball Ground Garden Tour and Daylily Sale, this Saturday, June 9th, from 10:0 AM until 3:00 PM. The tours begin at Ball Ground City Hall in the Botanical Garden at 215 Valley Street. There you will be able to purchase tickets to tour four additional local private gardens. Tickets are $15. Children under 12 are free. Tickets are available from any Garden Club Member or on the grounds of City Hall the day of the tour.

Saturday evening we have our monthly movie in the park……………providing no rain. We will be showing “Zootopia” at dark on the big screen.

Wednesday, June 13th at 11:00 AM Mayor Roberts and City Council Members will host the grand opening of the Ball Ground Senior Center located at 388 Groover Street. If you can, please come to check out this great new addition to our community.

The monthly meeting of Mayor and Council will be held Thursday, June 14th at 7:00 PM here at City Hall.

We have been told verbally, but waiting on written confirmation, that we should be able to go out to bid on the Valley Streetscapes project in August, with a bid opening in September, work beginning in October. We are very hopeful that we will clear the remaining hurdles in this Federal program, and get the project started.

It is that time of year again. We have been notified that two companies have applied for Federal Tax Credits to build workforce housing units (apartments) in Ball Ground. Both of these companies have applied previously, dating back to 2009 – but have not been awarded projects. The Georgia Department of Community Affairs will make the announcements as to tax credit recipients in late November (or at least historically they have done so at this time). As you may recall the State of Georgia changed the application process several years ago, and applicants are no longer required to hold public hearings on their projects. The local governments were removed from the application process about four years ago but still remain in control of architecture and design unique to their communities in the event tax credits are awarded within their jurisdiction.

Have a great week
