SchoolZone Safety Program

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Ball Ground Implements School Zone Speed Enforcement Program in Partnership with
RedSpeed

The City of Ball Ground is taking a significant step toward improving safety for students and pedestrians by launching a new School Zone Speed Enforcement Program at Ball Ground Elementary School STEM Academy. In collaboration with the speed enforcement company RedSpeed, this initiative will introduce automated speed cameras to help protect children and ensure safer school zones.

This program, fully funded through violator fines as per House Bill 978, will not burden taxpayers. RedSpeed is covering the entire cost of the program, including equipment, maintenance, permitting, and operational expenses, ensuring the program’s sustainability.

“Protecting children as they travel to and from school is one of our highest priorities,” said Greg Parks, Senior Vice President of RedSpeed. “By proactively enforcing speed limits in school zones, this program is an important step in safeguarding our community’s children.”

To enhance safety, the system will utilize Automatic License Plate Recognition (ALPR) technology and high-definition cameras. These tools will enable law enforcement to monitor speed and quickly respond to safety concerns. Additionally, the program will integrate alerts for vehicles linked to Amber Alerts and Temporary Protection Orders, further strengthening community security.

The speed cameras will operate on school days—one hour before school starts, throughout the school day, and one hour after dismissal, but only when school is in session. Drivers caught speeding 10 mph or more over the posted limit will be cited.

A 30-day warning period is officially underway to allow drivers time to adjust to the new program. During this period, drivers will receive warning letters instead of fines. Warning signs will also be placed in the school zone to notify drivers about the cameras.

After the warning period concludes, violators will face civil fines of $75 for the first offense and $125 for subsequent offenses. These fines will not result in points on a driver’s record or affect insurance rates.

This new enforcement initiative underscores the City of Ball Ground’s commitment to the safety of students, families, and school staff. By promoting safe driving and deterring speeding, we aim to create a safer environment for our most vulnerable citizens. We encourage all drivers to stay alert and follow speed limits to help ensure the safety of our children on their way to and from
school.
