Clean-Up Day

Hello Ball Ground –

On Saturday, July 25th between 8:00 AM and 2:00 PM we will have a large dumpster located in the Community Center Parking lot for use by the City of Ball Ground solid waste customers.  So if you have the City contract service through Advanced Disposal, and you are cleaning out your garage, closets, attic, whatever – you can bring your extra clean out items at no charge for disposal.

We will not be accepting the standard hazardous items for disposal (paint, fuel, tires, oils, batteries, etc.).

Again, this service will be for the City of Ball Ground Solid Waste customers through Advanced Disposal only.  The drop off will be staffed to verify eligibility, but unloading will be an individual responsibility.

Future Clean-Up Dates are scheduled for:
October 31, 2020
January 30, 2021
April 24, 2021

Have a great day Ball Ground.

Update from the City Manager

Good afternoon Ball Ground.

I wanted to share some comments from Mayor Roberts, at his request, concerning the ongoing Covid-19 threat to our community and state.

Hello Ball Ground Friends.

Governor Kemp joined our weekly conference call with mayors across the State that we have with Dr Toomey, head of the Georgia Department of Health.  As our numbers continue to spike our leaders at the State level are beginning to push more heavily for strict enforcement of the Governor’s Executive Orders at the local level.   Most critical among these mandates are the social distancing, and the expectation that our food service professionals who come in contact with the public wear masks.  So as we understand the orders, a cook at the grill need not wear a mask (by mandate), a cashier behind a plexiglass shield need not wear a mask (by mandate), but the server taking your order or bringing your food/beverage must wear a mask by order of the Governor although the mask can be removed if the server is not waiting on a customer.  People who do not reside in the same household are mandated, by Executive Order, to maintain a distance of 6 feet from each other inside and outside.   So if you can reach out and physically touch someone you don’t live with, you are way too close.

Governor Kemp was emphatic that before implementing more mandates, that he concedes will end up in court with judges and lawyers intervening, that we all do everything in our power to increase awareness, promote the wearing of masks, and to begin more aggressive enforcement of his existing orders.

The issue is that as a local government, we really don’t want to be in the business of trying to enforce the Governor’s orders.  Local enforcement  of the Governor’s order is questionable except by the Georgia State Patrol. But for now, we are simply asking for and appreciate the cooperation of our city customers, our residents, our businesses and our visitors to do the right thing for the benefit of both yourself and others by following the 3 W’s.  Wash Your Hands, Wear your mask and Watch your distance.

The Governor in his comments noted that enforcement can be a political challenge at the local level, especially in small communities where we more likely know each other, and stated he would make the Georgia State Patrol (GSP) more available for local enforcement in these situations.  But we would much rather see our community follow the mandates currently in place…..pertaining to wearing masks, maintaining mandated social distancing both inside and outside, and frequent sanitizing….than to have the GSP involved in compliance within our city.

On behalf of the City, I wanted to share with you some highlights of the Governors discussion with city officials and to thank you for helping to comply with measures to slow the spread of the virus which still has no vaccine.

Mayor Rick

At this time we have cancelled the remainder of our summer concert series as well as our “Music on Main” Saturday performances as we are not looking to consolidate any groups of people.  We are exploring the ability to place speakers on our downtown lamp posts and stream music that way to provide some background music and add to the already pleasant downtown atmosphere.  We are working to determine if we can accomplish this using the funds we had set aside for live performances/bands in City Park.

COVID-19 Testing Update

Hello Ball Ground:

We are hearing a lot of information on TV about the vast improvement in test availability in Georgia for COVID-19, as well as the fact that anyone can now be tested.

Unfortunately, due to interaction with a group of contractors who have now tested positive for COVID-19, I was instructed to get tested.  I have no symptoms, however, I got to experience first hands the challenges of testing.

First, let me just say if you require testing simply get in your car between 8:00 AM and 4 PM and drive to 5450 GA-20 in Cartersville, which is the “Clarence Brown Conference Center”.  This is a no-appointment-required drive-thru-center.  Stay in your car and get the test.  Results in 2-4 days (don’t have my results yet so will see how these numbers hold up).

Beyond that – my experience from yesterday –

Cherokee County Health Department Canton – can’t schedule a test thru them as advertised

Cherokee County Health Department Woodstock – can’t schedule a test thru them as advertised

Georgia State DPH Call Center – 2+ hours of non-stop calling.  Nobody answers.  After 50-60 rings it hangs up.

American Family Woodstock – Still a test center but out of tests

CVS – Portal was broken – could not schedule tests

Georgia Highlands – No tests available

So testing in Georgia, or at least here in Cherokee County is still quite a problem.  I can only imagine the frustration a person who was actually suffering from symptoms would have felt.

On July 24th the City will partner with Georgia Highlands to establish a drive-thru testing site at the Ball Ground Senior Center.  But as with all of the testing processes, the issue is how to get scheduled.  As soon as Georgia Highlands gives us the process for scheduling a test we will publish and encourage everyone possible to get tested.   We are pushing Georgia Highlands to just set up a non-appointment drive-thru as I went to in Cartersville but it will ultimately be dictated by the terms of their grant with the State.

Need a test?  Go to Cartersville.

Have a great day Ball Ground.

Fireworks! – Downtown Ball Ground – June 27

The Ball Ground Fireworks Display will be this Saturday, June 27th, at 9:45 PM.  Come early, grab dinner from one of our local restaurants and then just find a good spot to watch the show.  The show is very visible from Lions Field, Calvin Farmer Park (on the Old Dawsonville Road side of the small stream only), from the Tennis Courts, City Park, Downtown Sidewalks, Library, Post and many other locations close to downtown.  Tailgating, grilling, and family games are allowed and encouraged.  We do ask all of our residents to practice social distancing – still have fun – but slow the spread of COVID-19.  Due to increased size in the “fall-out” area, we must close Calvin Farmer Park east of the small stream and the community building parking lot.

Governor Executive Orders on COVID 19

Hello Ball Ground –

Another Executive Order, this one took effect yesterday, June 16th, 2020.

Crowd sizes are now up to 50 unless the 6 foot distancing can be implemented for more.

Many of the restrictions on restaurants have been lifted………but your server is required, by this order, to wear a face mask or shield.  We are asking our restaurants to diligently comply, and as a customer, you can certainly request them to comply as well.

Over the course of the next few days, you will get summaries and opinions from a wide variety of sources as to what the Governor “meant” – so just wanted you to have access to the full 40 pages to see what exactly was written.

Also – you might want to check out the link below, as it contains a lot of good information at the State level.

Public Input Requested

Hello Ball Ground:

Cherokee County and the City of Ball Ground are seeking public input on potential alternatives for a Truck Bypass to route trucks using SR 5 BU and SR 372 around the City of Ball Ground.

You can view the information developed so far at:

https://www.cherokeega.com/_focus/ball-ground-truck-bypass.php

The link is open now for viewing information about the possible project.

From now until July 3rd, 2020 a comment card will also be available at the above link where you can provide your thoughts and comments back to the planners.

Please take the time to review and provide your thoughts and feedback.

The sheet containing the various routes under consideration is quite busy and can be difficult to read.  We have larger boards for viewing in the lobby at City Hall, at Barrell House Coffee and Doner Frankfurt and Meats in downtown.  Next week an even larger board will be on display in the Food Court downtown.  Be sure to check it out.

If you have any difficulties with the comment card just send me an email to ewilmarth@cityofballground.com and I will get your comments to the right places.

#BALLGROUNDSTRONG

Thanks
Eric
